The musical Lion King tells the story of the struggles of the young Lion Prince Simba, who before his time has no choice but to come to terms with his fate of succeeding as the King of the Pride Lands due to the unexpected death of his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a beloved leader by the animals of the territory he rules, gets stabbed in the back by from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which ends in his murder. This forces the young prince into into exile for years, and where his long journey and his eventual return to his land and his destined rule as King.
Taken from the late 1994 motion picture of the the very same title created by Disney, The Lion King was beautifully adapted to the theater platform by director Julie Taymor and the magnificent ensemble and production crew. Its launch in 1997 was a testament to its success, being received positively by critics. Greg Evans of Variety encapsulates The Lion King with the most accuracy in his article, stating that “Julie Taymor's direction of this classic musical is a wonder, a theatrical achievement unequaled in its beauty, brains and ingenuity. As courageous and daring as Simba himself, the stage version enhances on distinct creative choices of the classic 1994 cartoon movie, from visual artistry and plot to Lebo M's writing and the beautifully Africanized original numbers of Elton John and Tim Rice."
