The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

The musical adaptation, The Lion King came on to the classical theater world with a masterful technique; critics claim that the musical, beginning with its debut, had elevated the retelling of The Lion King's narrative and transformed into more than the usual adaptation. With its utilization and combination of dance, costume design, and largely 3D puppetry, the Broadway play became a very distinct show rivaling to all theater performances. Since the plot of the adapted musical has animals as the characters, specifically the future King Simba and journey to becoming King of the Pride Lands, the challenge for the creative team was to basically adapt a cartoon to live action without seeming inauthentic. Julie Taymor, The Lion King’s director, embraced this endeavor and equally embraced the skill of utilizing puppets, skillfully utilizing real animal puppets onstage combined with outfits and music displaying African culture that upgraded the famous play.

In current times, Disney's The Lion King has truly cemented its position as one of the most successful plays in globally. With two tours across the world that have been running for over a decade and counting, and four other runs that have been running for more than 20 years, The Lion King carries on to reach new audiences in new countries. The Broadway hit has gained consistently positive reviews from from both fans and reviewers alike across its productions, while garnering endless awards and nominations, including NY Drama Critics Circle Awards and Molière Awards.

Since its first showing in Minneapolis, Minnesota in July of 1997 and its following shift to Broadway, New York in October 1997, Disney's The Lion King has performed cross-continent already. Ever since its beginning in 1997, it has been having runs in several locations with both local U.S. and international performances, spread over locations in Europe including Spain, United Kingdom, France, Germany, in addition to Singapore, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong in Asia which only names a few in a very long list of locations.
