The Lion King recounts the coming-of-age story of a little lion cub named Simba, who is next in line to become the King of the Pride Lands after his father. The African territory however is no stranger to political machinations, as even in this pure and childlike plot, tragedy appears when Simba's father Mufasa is killed because of the actions of his estranged uncle Scar, who harbors a secret hatred for the King of the Pride Lands. The young Simba chooses to escape the Pride Lands and goes into self-imposed banishment lasting a long period of time. In his time away, he meets new companions, Timon and Pumbaa, who bring joy to Simba's lonely life and include him in their group. Simba's relaxed demeanor then takes a turn when Simba once again meets his childhood confidant Nala, who shares the plight of the people with him and requests him to retake his rightful place as king.
This incredibly powerful story of loss, true friendship, and fearless leadership is amplified by the original film's music, penned by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original songs, coupled with more songs and lyrics from big names like Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have served as the foundation of The Lion King not just in local performances, but also in several tours all over the world.
The Disney stage adaptation premiered on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
