The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

The story of Disney’s The Lion King begins in a vast savanna territory in Africa; living in The Pride Lands, the teenage Prince Simba is fated to take over after his father, before betrayal occurs because of the work of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his intention to overthrow Simba's father, Mufasa, and become ruler himself. The first part's course of incidents leads to the young prince's escape from The Pride Lands and the tale of his ultimate homecoming to overthrow his uncle Scar and save his people.

The Lion King, since its formation, had to borrow several design elements and inspiration from real African civilization and historical texts given the play's setting. The story itself is actually founded on historical African warriors and actual happenings – Simba as an example is the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Malian Empire who was appropriately called The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first woman in the history of Broadway to win a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, especially costume design, which paved the way for a faultless staging of the show.
