The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

The Lion King shares the fate of the young lion cub Simba, who before long is forced to face his destiny of becoming the King of the Pride Lands due to the tragedy that befalls his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a beloved King by all of the territory he rules, faces immense jealousy from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which leaves Simba without a father. This forces Simba into into hiding for a long period of time, and this is where Simba's coming-of-age story and his sudden return to The Pride Lands and his rightful place as King.

Based off the original 1994 film of the the very same title produced by Disney, The Lion King was accurately translated to the theater platform by director Julie Taymor and the unsurpassed ensemble and crew. Its launch in the 90s was a testament to its success, being a multi-awarded debut. Greg Evans of Variety encapsulates the Broadway premiere with very positive words in his posting, sharing that “Julie Taymor's approach of Disney's The Lion King is a marvel, a successful adaptation unquestionable in its cultural and historical foundation. Leaping far beyond its celluloid inspiration, the live version improves upon distinct creative choices of the hit 1994 cartoon film, from color and vibrancy and plot to Lebo M's compositions and the beautifully African-inspired original numbers of Elton John and Tim Rice."

The ongoing musical was also met with the premier reviews from audiences. One in particular makes mention of how this successful musical can appropriately be called “The best Broadway has to offer”, expressing how he felt that “the show was fantastic. It was visually stunning and the score makes you feel all kinds of emotion. The African savanna setting really carried the characters to life.” Most audiences who have watched the performances over the past 20 years agree that despite being a second retelling of a film, the musical went above and beyond the original.

The approaching October’s season of The Lion King will be found in Minskoff Theatre at New York on Saturday 25th October 2025. Minskoff Theatre, being just as alive and creative as the Broadway play with the venue's naturally decorated interior and exterior architecture is pointed to by fans as the only option to be the venue of this famous show.
