The musical adaptation, The Lion King came on to the Broadway world with a unique execution; theater fans claim that the show, beginning with its debut, had transcended the traditional boundaries of theater and transformed into more than just your typical play. With its usage and blend of dance, costume design, and largely animal puppetry, the musical became a very unique performance rivaling to all theater performances. Because the plot of the adapted musical features animals, specifically the young Lion Prince Simba and lighthearted turned courageous life story, the most difficult task for the crew was to basically adapt a cartoon to live action without appearing inauthentic. Julie Taymor, the show director, embraced this challenge and also embraced the craft of puppetry, expertly using life-sized animal puppets for the Broadway play coupled with accurate costumes based on African tribes that dignified the musical.
