The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

The show narrates the lighthearted yet tragic struggles of a little lion cub called Simba, who is the only successor to lead as the King of the Pride Lands succeeding his father. The African savanna however is filled with secrecy and internal strife, as even in this innocent and easygoing narrative, tragedy strikes when the young prince's father and King is killed as a result of the actions of his evil uncle Scar, who wishes to take over as King of the Pride Lands. The fledgling cub fears for his own life and goes into self-imposed banishment that spans years. In his time away, he runs into new acquaintances, Timon and Pumbaa, who bring joy to Simba's lonely life and include him in their group. His relaxed demeanor then turns upside down when Simba once again meets his childhood companion Nala, who reveals the tyranny of Scar to him and requests him to retake his rightful place as king.

This incredibly powerful story of heartbreak, true friendship, and fearless leadership is amplified by the familiar classic songs, penned by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original compositions, coupled with more compositions and lyrics from other composers such as Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have contributed to the immense success of The Lion King not only in local performances, but also in international productions.

The original stage adaptation premiered on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The show was an instant box office hit and achieved almost instant success, ending up to the show's transfer and beginnings on the Broadway stage on October 15, 1997.
