This complicated plot of tragedy, true friendship, and acceptance of duty is intensified by the original film's music, penned by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original compositions, partnered with added music and lyrics from big names like Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have served as the foundation of the musical not only in the United States, but also in international productions.

The original stage adaptation debuted on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The musical was an instant box office hit and set a standard for contemporary theater, leading to the show's shift and reopening in Broadway, New York on October 15, 1997.
