The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

Listed currently as the third of Broadway’s longest-running productions of all time, The Lion King has brought the 1994 original film to life with multiple tours that have landed in not just many states in the U.S., but also Canada, South America, and Europe among others. On March, The Lion King adds one more to its toured cities as The Lion King will be touring in Minskoff Theatre at New York on Sunday 8th March 2026!

The renowned musical, since its inception and transfer to the Broadway stage in 1997, has changed the landscape of Broadway and theater entirely. With a beloved tale translated creatively to the live stage with the unique introduction of life-sized animal puppets and an African-inspired song list and performance numbers, the musical was referred to as an impressive surprise to both fans of the previous movie and even new viewers.

Leveling up from a very inspired creation, the historic play is also assuredly one of the most successful musicals in every award season the musical partook in. In quick fashion after its first performance, the Broadway show was nominated for over 20 awards, winning 6 Tonys at the time including Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (by Richard Hudson), Best Choreography (by Garth Fagan), Best Lighting Design (by Donald Holder), Best Direction of a Musical and Best Costume Design (by Julie Taymor). The award given for Best Direction of a Musical is considered major, as Julie Taymor is the first female director to ever receive the award.

Over the next two decades, the Broadway musical carried on to prove its standing and timelessness with more than over 70 major theater awards and nominations obtained. In its multiple tours and productions all over the world, it has been awarded by numerous institutions which includes the NY Drama Critics Circle, The Grammys, the Laurence Olivier Awards, the Molière Awards, and the Helpmann Awards.
