The tale of The Lion King starts in a vast savanna territory in Africa; set in The Pride Lands, the teenage heir Simba leads a free and easy life, before betrayal occurs because of the actions of his jealous uncle Scar and his desire to take the throne and become the ruling monarch himself. The first half's course of events leads to the little lion's escape from The Pride Lands and the story of his ultimate homecoming to overthrow his uncle Scar and save his people.
The musical, since its formation, had to maintain accuracy using real-life sources from real African society and historical texts given the show's context. The story itself is actually based on real African warriors and actual happenings – Simba as an example is the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the founder of the Imperial Mali who was appropriately named The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first woman in the history of Broadway to gain a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, specifically with design, which resulted in an accurate live adaptation of The Lion King. The outfits in particular are respectful portrayals of several indigenous tribes in Africa, a portrayal of which is Simba’s outfit in the musical which is actually based on Kenyan Maasi warriors' outfits. Just like the original 1994 film, the remarkable musical score created by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African heritage, with the musical even including compositions with lyrics that are performed either partly or completely in African dialects including Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African theme is also noticeable in dance numbers, with a lot of the numbers presenting the seamlessness of Bali-inspired choreography.
