Broadway is the home of one more world-class musical, Disney’s The Lion King, as it continues its successful run with one more limited season to be performed on Saturday 13th September 2025 in Minskoff Theatre, found in New York, New York. The musical tells the coming-of-age story of a young lion cub called Simba, who is next in line to lead as the King of the Pride Lands following his father. The African savanna however is filled with secrecy and internal strife, as even in this pure and childlike narrative, misfortune strikes when the young lion's father and King is killed as a result of the betrayal of his wicked uncle Scar, who wishes to take over as King of the Pride Lands. The immature prince chooses to escape the Pride Lands and goes into exile lasting a long period of time. In his time away, he meets new acquaintances, Timon and Pumbaa, who bring joy to Simba's lonely life and include him in their group. the young prince's happy-go-lucky mindset then suddenly changes when he once more meets his childhood friend Nala, who shares the plight of the people with him and appeals to him to save the people of his land.
This incredibly powerful story of tragedy, strong bonds, and eventual redemption is enhanced by the iconic and emotional music, penned by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original compositions, coupled with additional songs and lyrics from big names like Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have improved and elevated the quality of the show not just in local performances, but also in several tours all over the world.
The Lion King premiered on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was an instant box office hit and was praised for its unique execution, ending up to the musical's move and premiere in Broadway, New York on October 15, 1997.
