The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

Disney’s The Lion King follows the struggles of the little lion cub Simba, who before his time has no choice but to come to terms with his fate of leading as the leader of the Pride Lands due to the tragedy that befalls his father, Mufasa. Mufasa, who is a well-loved King by all of the Pride Lands, gets stabbed in the back by from Scar, Simba’s uncle, which leads to his death. This forces the lion cub into into hiding for years, and jumpstarts his long journey and his sudden homecoming to The Pride Lands and his seat on the throne.

Taken from the late 1994 motion picture of the same title created by Disney, The Lion King was skillfully transformed to the Broadway stage by director Julie Taymor and the stunning ensemble and creative team. Its premiere in the 90s was the first of its kind, being a multi-awarded debut. Greg Evans of Variety encapsulates The Lion King with very positive words in his review, mentioning that “Julie Taymor's staging of this Broadway mainstay is a marvel, a assured box office hit unrivaled in its beauty, brains and ingenuity. Leaping far beyond its celluloid inspiration, the Broadway adaptation improves upon distinct creative choices of the hit 1994 cartoon film, from color and vibrancy and narrative to Lebo M's writing and the freshly Africanized original songs of Elton John and Tim Rice."
