The Lion King at Minskoff Theatre

The show tells the tale of growth of a young lion cub named Simba, who is the only successor to become the King of the Pride Lands after his father. The African savanna however is filled with secrecy and internal strife, as even in this often lighthearted plot, disaster strikes when the young lion's father Mufasa is killed due to the intent of his estranged uncle Scar, who harbors a secret hatred for the King of the Pride Lands. The young Simba is forced to flee from his home and goes into exile for much of his early childhood. During this exile, he meets new acquaintances, Timon and Pumbaa, who encourage him to forget his past and live life on his own terms. His happy-go-lucky mindset then takes a turn when he once more meets his long-time confidant Nala, who shares the plight of the people with him and asks him to retake his rightful place as king.

This heartfelt and personal narrative of tragedy, unfound courage, and acceptance of duty is enhanced by the iconic and emotional music, created by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original songs, coupled with added music and lyrics from other composers such as Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have contributed to the immense success of The Lion King not just in Broadway, but also in several tours all over the world.

The Disney stage adaptation debuted on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The musical was received so well by fans and was praised for its unique execution, leading to the show's transfer and premiere in Broadway, New York on October 15, 1997.
